Medical Department
Our Medical Team, including a School Nurse and a Health Care Assistant, work in partnership with young people, parents/carers, staff and external professionals to ensure that children and their families get the help they need. The pupils have access to a range of medical services in the school to meet their health care needs. We have a well equipped Medical Suite so that they can be looked after and receive appropriate care when needed.
The Medical Team manage and dispense medication and health care needs on a daily basis and also currently operate a triaged appointments system. The team provide advice and guidance to those experiencing mental health problems or regarding sensitive issues such as exercise and diet, substance misuse and sexual health. Each young person has a "Health Care Plan‟ and well documented records.
The health care needs of the children and young people can be significant and therefore a whole school approach is necessary. The medical team play their part in promoting healthy living as well as responding to the needs of individual children. They provide confidential health advice, and where necessary ensure relevant information is passed on. Staff pass any concerns to the medical department, and are given advice and training as required.
Referrals to external services
Young people can also be referred to specialist health care professionals if needed and this is arranged through consultation with parents/carers, WKS staff and external health professionals. The medical team are pro-active and liaise with a range of professionals – CAMHS, dieticians, physiotherapists, consultant paediatricians, specialist nurses, psychologists and psychiatrists. They also ensure immunisation programmes are carried out and also continue to develop their knowledge.
The current emphasis on health promotion in schools and the community means that this is a key part of the school nurse's role and often focuses on; exercise and healthy eating including combating obesity and eating disorders; mental health and wellbeing, including dealing with depression and bullying; sexual health and relationships, including teenage pregnancy; drug and alcohol abuse and smoking.
Covid-19
In this Covid-19 period our Medical Team wear PPE at all times, adhere to strict infection control policies and keep a detailed log of pupils who are symptomatic. All information is of course confidential.
